PanARMENIAN.Net - International human rights lawyer Robert Amsterdam has called on the European Union's response mission to Armenia to provide equal support to all political parties.
Speaking on behalf of Strong Armenia party leader Samvel Karapetyan, Amsterdam made the statement in a Facebook post, while also welcoming the EU rapid response team's deployment to Armenia.
"Our clear demand from the European Union is the rule of law and equality for all. While we welcome the EU rapid response team's work in Armenia, our expectations are clear," he wrote.
According to Amsterdam, key priorities should include:
A strong focus on upholding the rule of law.
Equal and transparent support for all political parties.
Openness of the mission's activities to all stakeholders and public groups in Armenia.
At the same time, Narek Karapetyan, coordinator of the Mer Dzevov movement, explained the legal mechanisms that made it possible to nominate Samvel Karapetyan for prime minister, referring to Article 148 of the Constitution.
"Twenty days after the elections, we will introduce a legislative amendment allowing any individual holding only Armenian citizenship to become prime minister. At that point, Samvel Karapetyan will hold only Armenian citizenship," he said.
