Jordan FM calls for cementing Lebanon ceasefire, state authority

AMMAN, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Thursday called for solidifying the new ceasefire in Lebanon and supporting the country's sovereignty by restricting weapons strictly to state authorities.

During a phone conversation with Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen, Safadi stressed the urgency of reaching a fundamental solution that guarantees permanent security and stability in the Middle East, according to a foreign ministry statement.

On the occupied Palestinian territories, both sides underscored the imperative to stabilize Gaza, ensure sustained and unimpeded humanitarian access, and halt Israel's "unlawful" operations in the West Bank.

Berendsen underscored the importance of respecting the historical and legal status quo of Jerusalem's holy sites under the Hashemite Custodianship.

The development came as Israel and Lebanon agreed Wednesday to implement a ceasefire after trilateral negotiations in Washington.

The ceasefire is contingent on a complete cessation of Hezbollah fire and the withdrawal of all Hezbollah members from areas south of the Litani River.
