PanARMENIAN.Net - International legal expert and founder of Amsterdam & Partners LLP, Robert Amsterdam, wrote in a Facebook post that the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's government's interference in the affairs of the Armenian Apostolic Church is "a direct attack on democracy and the Constitution."
"This reminds me of only one historical precedent - the Bolshevik crackdowns and their attempts to divide the Church," he wrote.
"I want to be clear. We will not allow these violations. We will defend the Church's freedom strictly within the law and through international legal channels," Amsterdam added.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and ten bishops and archbishops who have demanded the Catholicos' resignation recently issued a joint statement calling for reforms in the Armenian Apostolic Church. Pashinyan read the statement during a Facebook livestream, after which the clerics signed it.
Pashinyan announced the formation of a coordinating council tasked with organizing church reform. The council can be expanded only through a unanimous decision.
