WARSAW, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Striker Mikael Ishak led Poland's champions Lech Poznan to a 1-0 home victory over Qarabag from Azerbaijan in the first leg of the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League first qualifying round on Tuesday.
Dutch coach John van den Brom made a perfect debut on Lech's bench to watch Joel Pereira's perfect cross from the right wing, allowing Ishak to break the deadlock from a very close range with four minutes remaining in the first half.
Although Qarabag had the better of the match in the beginning as wingers Abdellah Zoubir and Kady were difficult to stop for the hosts' defenders, the Polish champions were more effective.
Lech could have doubled the lead in the second half but goalie Shahrudin Mahammadaliyev denied Filip Szymczak's effort.
"We are very happy with the result. I think the better team won. I'm aware that Qarabag had the ball, but it's important for us that in the difficult moment we were able to break the rival," Lech's midfielder Radoslaw Murawski said after the game.
The second leg will be played on July 12.
