Tokyo stocks rise strongly Monday, broader market lags

SYDNEY, Australia - The U.S. dollar broadly fell in Asia on Monday while stocks were decidely mixed.

The best performer on the day was Tokyo's Nikkei 225, which rose 298.55 points or 1.37% to close at 22,169.11.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng conversely gave up 99.04 points or 0.33%, to last trade at 29,810.72.

The Australian All Ordinaries was flat, rising just 0.90 of a point or 0.01% to 6,307.90.

In China, the Shanghai Composite slipped 10.84 points or 0.34% to 3,172.79.

The euro consolidated above the 1.1300 handle, to last trade at 1.1315 iaround the Sydney close on Monday.

The British pound cruised up to 1.3095.

The Japanese yen was little changed at 111.96.

The Swiss franc rose to 1.0021.

The Canadian dollar was a fraction stronger at 1.3335.

The Australian dollar advanced to 0.7173, while the New Zealand dollar gained to 0.6767.
